For my contextual review I've been looking at the sculpture Theodore: the sculpture of his son that Jacob Epstein never made 2010 by Bob and Robert Smith and how the research for the Epstein collection inspired him to create this piece.
The sculpture which is a memorial to Theo is created from random pieces of wood and other found objects and typography. which is a different style to his previous work.
The 2000 turner prize winners work often depicts political messages and personal life experiences threw sign art, like this piece 'This artist is deeply dangerouse' 2009
bob decided to create this sculpture as of all of his children Theo who like Epstein was a talented artist, was the only one he never created a bust of.
the eldest son of Kathleen Garmen and Jacob Epstein, Theo grew up illegitimate not knowing that the man who often came to his home was his father. Theo was considered illegitimate by society threw out his life as Kathleen and Jacob did not marry until after his death.
Epstein was known for making his sculpture from small pieces of clay and slowly building up, making his sitters have to spend hours sitting for him.
Theo however seemed to make a point of creating paintings that where the opposite of Epstein's style, maybe so not to be compared to him or simply because he saw the beauty of simple things.
keeping that in mind bob seems to want to do the same when creating Theo's sculpture, using the same idea of building up from a piece he describes as a spine, he adds pieces of wood as he works from photos of Theo.
in his last few years as Theo's illness took hold he would write note's off-ton ramblings in books in a possible attempt to filter out these thoughts. bob states that he felt it important to include these pieces of Theo to make the work not only a portrait but an inner depiction of him.
an assortment of pieces that do not seem to fit together of a man who was clearly a loving brother and friend, described as having a clumsy nature which was sadly ended in an early death that has never clearly been explained.
This is hauntingly depicted by another extremely talented artist. Bob and Roberta Smith has created a piece of work that brings to light a man who stated himself 'lived in a time of false fear' of an illness that cut short the life of this talented artist.
