Carsten Nicolai: Static Fades Christoph Doswald
Berlin-based artist and musician Carsten Nicolai, born in 1965, is one of very few contemporary artists who convincingly work in the conflict zone between art, science and sound. Equally respected in the art world and the electronic music community, his works lay open the functional principles of codification, self-organization and perception so that the hand of the artist recedes and the classical notion of an oeuvre is put into question. Drawing on sounds available in our everyday environment, Nicolai creates soundscapes and installations redolent with clicks and blips from telephones, faxes and other technological detritus: he creates an elementary, universal language that eludes rationality, requesting instead to simply be perceived by the individual. This survey spans from Nicolai’s well-known 1997 Documenta X project, “Infinity”—in which 72 short audio works were discretely embedded throughout Kassel’s public spaces—to new pieces produced for a recent solo exhibition at Zurich’s Haus Konstruktiv

Painting project final piece: Part two and seminar feedback

I have got some really good feed back and ideas from my seminar, the ideas I like the most and will do some test pieces on are the idea of have a canvas on a reel almost like a tape and building up certain areas to give them a 3D effect. the idea of infinity was also put forward which I'm also going to look into.

Images of my painting project so far.

Painting project final piece: Part one

Having traced my voice wave on to acetate I have now enlarged it on to a blank wall using a projector. I also taped a strip of canvas onto the wall.

I'm now in the process of painting over the projected image with black acrylic. This section has taken me about 2 hours. Apologies for the poor quality photos they were taken with my phone.

Painting project finale idea - "This is not my voice"

For my painting project ive been looking at the idea put forward by Rene Marguerite's "This is not a pipe" now I've played around with the idea as seen with my "I am not a chair", I've decided to create a large scale canvas replica of my voice self-recording print out. I recorded to scripts of me talking for part of my second life project and over lapped them and added an echo. so my idea for the painting project is three large paintings, the two single recordings and the overlapped one.

A little bit of humour :~)

Remake / Photo Project

Adobe recently put forth a challenge to students in the UK with a cash prize of £10,000. The deadline is soon so if you want in on it you better work quick! Since so many of our readers live outside the UK I thought it might be fun to work with Adobe on our own project. They thought so too, so here it is!
The Booooooom + Adobe Remake photo project.
Booooooom x Adobe Remake Project

The idea of the project is to remake a famous work of art using photography. This photo by Sarah Hermans is a perfect example of what I’m after as it references Michelangelo’s “Creation of Adam” simply, and beautifully. Now I don’t have £10,000 to put up as prize money but I was able to get a copy of the entire Adobe Creative Suite 5.5 Master Collection ($899).
Adobe Creative Suite 5.5 Master Collection Student Edition
RULES
1. This is a PHOTO project! I’m looking for photos only. This means no paintings, drawings, collages. The idea is to put all your creative energy into re-creating and re-staging the image. All the work here happens before you take the photo, rather than afterward. Please refrain from adding special effects and other things to your image on your computer.
2. Please reference classic works of art, I’m not looking for remakes of contemporary artwork, album covers, or fashion photography.
3. This isn’t a rule but if you want a bit of inspiration take a look at: Miranda July as movie extras.
HOW TO SUBMIT
1. Jump over to our FACEBOOK PAGE.
2. Upload a photo to our wall. A limit of 2 submissions please!
3. Where it says “say something about this photo…” write the name of the famous work of art you have remade, and copy/paste this link: http://booo.ms/r46XWc
how to do it
4. Hit the share button and you’re all done.
The best submissions will be posted in a gallery on Booooooom and one of you will walk away with the prize!
Deadline for submissions is October 21st 2011.
By submitting your work to the Booooooom Facebook group you are giving us permission to post them on our website and pass them along to other blogs and news outlets who want to post about the project!

contextual review essay 2nd draft: The Intro

Theodore: The sculpture of his son that
Jacob Epstein never made.

By Bob and Roberta Smith, 2010.

The History behind the art.
Intro:
This essay will be looking at the differences between Theodore Garmen and Jacob Epstein’s work in relationship to the sculpture Bob and Roberta Smith created. As well as aspects of the research/archive at the Walsall Gallery that Bob Smith would have considered during his residency at the gallery that made him feel obligated to create this piece of work. Focusing on Theo’s letters and books in addition to his own work and looking at the differences in the aesthetic and composition of Theo and Epstein’s work. Coupled with  different characteristics which Bob and Roberta Smith used to create the Theodore sculpture and how he endeavoured to reflect Theo’s personality within it.

This weeks task: identifying the three most important issues referred to in order to do more research on them

Issue One: Theodore's work and the difference between that of Jacob Epstein's work, and how Bob brought this in to his own sculpture.

Issue Two: Aspects of the research that made bob feel this piece should be made.

Issue Three: How Bob tried to reflect Theo's personality with in the sculpture.

These are the three main aspects that I tried to put across in my presentation. Which I hope I accomplished succesfully if not overly clearly. I feel that if the clarity was lost then this is due to two points.A:  My lack of presentation experience, and B: Time restriction. But these points will hopefully come across clearer within my contextual analysis.

Inspirational works for Second life project

Painting project up date

I've been looking at Rene Maggarit's "this is not a pipe" and the idea of an image not being that which it dipicts. so thinking on this line i started creating chairs marked out with masking paper then painted the canvas  with block colour.

La trahison des images, 1928–29, sometimes translated as The Treason of Images

While researching some of the artist suggested to me during my tutorial with Anna I came across some amazing work by sound artist Susan Phillipsz.

Response to my response

OK so on reflection my rant was a little unnecessary but important to me as if I had not got out my initial stress I would be on day three of no sleep. But looking back I can see that I may not have put across my point to the best of my ability or shown the research aspect to a expectable level. I will hopefully learn from these mistakes which I can apply to the next presentation task.

Response to power point presentation feedback

First off I want to say that that this is not a attack at anyone. The response to the presentation has sent me in to a blind panic. I no I as nervous which sent my timing off, but when it comes to the research and preparation I don't no whether I'm one off those who's presentation seemed to lack research! As with me this is not the case I personally put two hours a day aside every day for research and all day Sunday and started researching and preping as soon as we were set the essay. This may not have reflected in my presentation as this was the first time I have every done one. OK so this may seem like a neurotic rant but I shall now spend the next four days stressing as to whether or not I'm one of the ones that got it all wrong or just some of it wrong, I don't expect to have made no mistakes but which ones?

I came across Korean artist Seo Young Deok while researching.

Second life Project - Creating my death mask part one

After apply cling film over my entire face leaving holes for my nose and mouth strips of mod roc are applied

As you can see the mod roc is covering my neck, entire face and head.

The completed mould has been removed and left to air dry.

A coat of natural bees wax is applied.

Reflective response to power-point presentation

First of I wanted to say that all the presentations of my group were really good and informative.

I found my presentation really stressful even though I spent the past 2 weeks preparing for it. Presentations have always been a week point for me and saying my own name wrong didn't exactly set this ones of to a great start. I had some trouble with the timing which I new about before hand but was unable to ad lib to extend from my notes cards which left a silences between slides. Even though it left me in a bit of a state of panic I see this as a chance to test myself and although I know I will never be able to approach presentations with complete calm I hope to improve my confidence for future presentations, and hopefully get some positive lecturer feed back.

Power point presentation with notes

For my contextual review I've been looking at the sculpture Theodore: the sculpture of his son that Jacob Epstein never made 2010 by Bob and Robert Smith and how the research for the Epstein collection inspired him to create this piece.

The sculpture which is a memorial to Theo is created from random pieces of wood and other found objects and typography. which is a different style to his previous work.

The 2000 turner prize winners work often depicts political messages and personal life experiences threw sign art, like  this piece 'This artist is deeply dangerouse' 2009

bob decided to create this sculpture as of all of his children Theo who like Epstein was a talented artist, was the only one he never created a bust of.

the eldest son of Kathleen Garmen and Jacob Epstein, Theo grew up illegitimate not knowing that the man who often came to his home was his father. Theo was considered illegitimate by society threw out his life as Kathleen and Jacob did not marry until after his death.

Epstein was known for making his sculpture from small pieces of clay and slowly building up, making his sitters have to spend hours sitting for him.

Theo however seemed to make a point of creating paintings that where the opposite of Epstein's style, maybe so not to be compared to him or simply because he saw the beauty of simple things.

keeping that in mind bob seems to want to do the same when creating Theo's sculpture, using the same idea of building up from a piece he describes as a spine, he adds pieces of wood as he works from photos of Theo.

in his last few years as Theo's illness took hold he would write note's off-ton ramblings in books in a possible attempt to filter out these thoughts. bob states that he felt it important to include these pieces of Theo to make the work not only a portrait but an inner depiction of him.

an assortment of pieces that do not seem to fit together of a man who was clearly a loving brother and friend, described as having a clumsy nature which was sadly ended in an early death that has never clearly been explained.

This is hauntingly depicted by another extremely talented artist. Bob and Roberta Smith has created a piece of work that brings to light a man who stated himself 'lived in a time of false fear' of an illness that cut short the life of this talented artist.
