THIS STILL NEEDS WORK
Artist statement
Zoe L Maltby-Baker
To me art is a way to say and express my internal struggles, my view and opinion; as verbal communication is not something I am able to do in a coherent way. Furthermore it is away for me to let others experience the difficulties I face on a day to day basis.
I cannot place my work into any one category as I feel experimentation with all mediums is how I am able to express my frame of mind at the time of creation. I do not tend to work on a small scale and will use any think I can get my hands on, whether it is an old door or a pile of damaged roof slates. There is however always some aspect of text with in my work.
At this time I am creating work which highlights the difficulties I encounter with reading black on white, white on black. I am looking at different ways of coding text so to deny the viewer the knowledge of what my working is saying. I have been looking at artists such as Scott Blake: who used hundreds of bar codes to create portraits, but also had information imbedded into each of the individual bar code.
The direction I see my work going in the future is to create work that makes people stop and think about the difficulties people have with communication and how the stigma connected to these issues only serve to make life harder. My aim is to have the viewer’s experience these difficulties themselves.
